Application of the anode and cathode catalysts directly to the AEM surface reduces the physical distance between the anode and cathode electrodes where anion species movement is accomplished with minimal overpotential penalties and, hence, significantly higher alkaline water electrolysis efficiencies can be attained for this state-of-the-art 3-layer alkaline water electrolysis MEA compared to the conventional AEM electrolyzers where anode and cathode electrodes are manually placed on the membrane without any interface generation.
